Gwangan Bridge (or Gwangandaegyo, 'gyo' for bridge) is a famous bridge in Busan City. The bridge is Busan 66, also called Gwangan-daero.
This long above the sea structure stretches over 7. 4 kilometers from Namcheon-dong to Centum City (U-dong, Haeundae District). It is not only the longest bi-level bridge above the sea in Busan but also in the whole of South Korea.
Two Sides of Beauty
At night or evening time, the bridge shows off its series and mesmerizing dancing lights. This colorful beauty is only observable, obviously, when darkness comes.
Gwangandaegyo Bridge is equipped with thousands of LED (light-emitting diodes) lights. Its majestic beauty attracts lovers and visitors with its romantic colors and atmosphere.
Even locals and residents do not get bored in watching such lighting exhibition that changes depending on the season.
On the other hand, you will surely be amazed not by the bridge itself but on what you will witness from it.
Gwangan Bridge does not only give you a prompt channel to get around but also breath-taking panoramic views of the nearby Busan tourist attractions.
Such nearby attractions include the boundless sight of the blue ocean, Oryukdo Island, Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, Gwangalli Beach, Dongbaek Island Park, and also Dalmaji Hill, among others.
Gwangandaegyo, Gwangan Bridge, or the Diamond Bridge is a suspension bridge structure of this City. The road stretches about 6,500 meters long, but the whole bridge structure is over 7,400 meters long if measured from both ends.
As a bridge structure, it is the second-longest bridge in South Korea after the Incheon Bridge, which connects Songdo Island and the main road leading to Incheon International Airport.
Gwangan Bridge in Busan City commenced its construction in 1994 and completed in 2002 (December). The total amount reached almost 790 billion Korean Won.
It was initially opened in September and October 2002 for the Asian Games. The bridge was officially inaugurated in January 2003 when the construction was completed.
BIZARRE ACCIDENT: Gwangan Bridge made international headlines when a Russian cargo ship crashed the lower level of the bridge in February 2019. The accident caused a 5-meter wide damage part of the bridge, but no injuries were recorded. According to the reports, the captain of the ship was intoxicated when the ship just left the Port of Busan for Vladivostock. I saw the phone-captured videos circulated online!
