Origin of Name

Samilpo, a picturesque lake situated in South Korea, is steeped in history and legend.

According to legend, the lake's name was derived from a fascinating story during the Silla Dynasty. It is said that the Four Immortals of Silla, known for their love of music, came to Samilpo and played their instruments for three days straight.

The sound of their music was so captivating that even the birds and animals stopped to listen.

As the Immortals played, the lake's water began to sparkle and shimmer, and the trees around the lake started to sway in rhythm with the music.

The people of Silla were so enchanted by the music that they named the lake Samilpo, which means "three-day lake."

Natural Environment

Samilpo is a picturesque lake amidst 36 majestic peaks that add to the stunning beauty of the place. The lake's tranquil waters are home to four enchanting islands that are a treat to the eyes.

Among these islands, Sasanjung stands out where the Four Immortals of Silla - Yeongrang, Sullang, Ansang, and Nangrang - are believed to have spent their time.

The other three islands are equally captivating and are named Sasanjung, Museondae, Bongnakdae, and Seokdae.

On the northern side of the lake, there is an inscription that reads "Yeongrangdo Namsokhaeng" and is carved in Danseoju script. This place is called Danseo Rock and is a popular attraction among visitors.

Origin of the Lake

Samilpo, originally a bay, underwent several changes over time, ultimately transforming into a rock lake.

The accumulation of sand caused by wave action and coastal currents at the mouth of the bay was the primary cause of this change.

As the sea level gradually rose to its current level around 6,000 years ago, the inland lowlands were submerged, leading to a significant sediment supply from rivers.

This sediment eventually blocked the bay's entrance, causing the inland lowlands to become a lake, which is estimated to have occurred around 3,000 years ago.

Current Status

Samilpo Lake in Gosung is one of the Gwandong Eight Scenic Views north of the Military Demarcation Line. With its many attractions and beautiful scenery, it has been developed as a recreational area and designated Natural Monument No. 218 in North Korea.
