Saryeoni Forest Path

Saryeoni Forest Path is among the top and famous trails for hikers who love healing and union with nature and forests. Saryeoni is located in Southeastern Jeju on Jeju Island, South Korea.

Saryeoni Forest is a 'gotjawal' forest. A gotjawal forest is thought to be a forest in rocky areas with specific plants living in its ecosystem, and that the rain penetrates to the groundwater aquifer.

Specifically, you can find the gotjawal forests on the northern and southern parts of the island.

Some of the essential features that identify gotjawal are the following...

  • The temperature of the forest is constant all year round. This could be due to the lava rock that made up the ground of the forest area;
  • the porous ground composed by the lava rock functions like a lung of the forest; and
  • the porous ground absorbs water and evaporates moisture for the trees to intake.

Such exciting features of a gotjawal make them attractive to hikers--cool during summer and relatively warm in the winter (usually there's no snow in gotjawal forest areas).
